Cheryl Crist has been a lot of things: high school teacher, military wife and mother, radio personality, stockbroker, manager of an adult day care facility, real estate agent, yoga teacher, antiwar activist.
Now Crist, a progressive Olympia Democrat, is making her second serious run for the 3rd Congressional District seat. And though the state Democratic Party snubbed her at its convention in Vancouver last month, shes determined as she travels across the district delivering her message about the high costs of war and the choices the nation faces.

Convective-Stratiform Precipitation Variability at Seasonal Scale from 8 Yr of TRMM Observations: Implications for Multiple Modes of Diurnal Variability

ABSTRACT
This study investigates the variability of convective and stratiform rainfall from 8 yr (1998-2005) of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) and TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) measurements, focusing on seasonal diurnal variability. The main scientific goals are 1) to understand the climatological variability of these two dominant forms of precipitation across the four cardinal seasons and over continents and oceans separately and 2) to understand how differences in convective and stratiform rainfall variations ultimately determine how the diurnal variability of the total rainfall is modulated into multiple modes.
There are distinct day-night differences for both convective and stratiform rainfall. Oceanic (continental) convective rainfall is up to 25% (50%) greater during nighttime (daytime) than daytime (nighttime). The seasonal variability of convective rainfall's day-night difference is relatively small, while stratiform rainfall exhibits very apparent day-night variations with seasonal variability. There are consistent late evening diurnal peaks without obvious seasonal variations over ocean for convective, stratiform, and total rainfall. Over continents, convective and total rainfall exhibit consistent dominant afternoon peaks with little seasonal variations-but with late evening secondary peaks exhibiting seasonal variations. Stratiform rainfall over continents exhibits a consistent strong late evening peak and a weak afternoon peak, with the afternoon mode undergoing seasonal variability

General Electric Co. will pay $23.4 million to settle federal charges that some of its subsidiaries paid illegal kickbacks to the Iraqi government in order to win contracts under a U.N. program.
The Securities and Exchange Commission said in a civil complaint filed Tuesday in federal court that GE subsidiaries gave cash, computers, medical supplies and other goods worth $3.6 million to the Iraqi health and oil ministries from 2000 to 2003. The SEC alleged the kickbacks were in return for contracts to supply medical and water purification equipment under the United Nations' oil-for- food program, which provided humanitarian aid to prewar Iraq.
GE agreed to pay a $1 million penalty and give up about $22.5 million in profit and interest earned from the transactions.

WE have a good guy in the White House: a smart man of judicious temperament and profound ideals, a man with a sweet private life, a man of dignity and good humor. His enemies, waving their hairy arms and legs, woofing, yelling absurdities, only make him look taller.
Washington, being a company town, feasts on gossip, but I think the Democratic Party -- skittish as it is, full of happy blather -- somehow has brought forth a champion. This should please anyone who loves this country. As for the others, let them chew on carpets and get what nourishment they can.
End of sermonette.
The beauty part of my week was a visit to the warehouse district north of downtown Minneapolis. There, in my boyhood, I used to ride my bike past printing plants and barrel works, small factories, a slaughterhouse, lumberyards and auto salvage yards. I was fascinated by the sight of men at work, and where, now, a new ballpark has arisen. Though we are still knee-deep in snow, on April 12 the Minnesota Twins will open the 2010 campaign, against the mighty Red Sox and their nation.
I snuck into the park through a door left ajar, attached myself to a group of suits on tour and got to see the whole joint: the steep left-field bleachers, the spruce trees in deep center, the sky boxes (each with a porch, so the nabobs can get fresh air), the locker room (with batting cage and pitching machine nearby), the spot where the statue of Harmon Killebrew will stand.
To me, a skeptic when it comes to public works, this looks to be the Eighth Wonder of the World, a temple on the order of Wrigley or Fenway or the Acropolis. It's a beautiful little bandbox of a ballpark, tucked snugly into streets of old warehouses and the Burlington rail yards, with commuter trains running to its front door -- a sight that fills me with unmitigated, dizzy delight.
Minnesotans have been watching baseball in a basement for 28 years, under a fabric dome on a plastic field designed for football. Come April, we'll be sitting in sunlight or under the stars, with the handsome towers of downtown Minneapolis just beyond center field. We'll mill on the great concourse just behind the loge seats and eyeball the game while ordering a steak sandwich or an old- fashioned Schweigert hot dog. Hallelujah. Wowser.
That this beauty was accomplished through public financing -- $392 million of the $544 million total paid through a sales tax approved by the legislature -- is some sort of triumph. To an old Democrat like me, who believes government can do some good things right and is not a blight upon the land, this ballpark is an enormous pleasure.
And so, I headed south to my favorite medical clinic to make sure I'd live until opening day.
